Department of Community Medicine

The Department of Community Medicine is well established. It is a state¬-of art, modern and a model center for teaching, learning and research in the subject. Community Medicine Museum has been equipped with about 200 modern models of insects, parasites, Nutrition, Occupational Health, Family Planning Methods, Communicable Diseases and Non-Communicable Diseases for learning of students. It is worth seeing and visiting.

COL (R) DR. MUHAMMAD ASHRAF CHAUDHRY

Professor of Community Medicine and Head of Department

Col (R) Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Chaudhry is Professor & Head of Community Medicine at CMH Lahore Medical College, Lahore Cantt. Dr Ashraf Chaudhry is highly qualified, renowned and most experienced Public Health Professional having degrees of MBBS, DPH, MPH (USA), M.Sc (Adv Med Adm) and FCPS. He did his MBBS from Quadi-i-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur in 1979, Diploma in Public Health (DPH) from Punjab University in 1986, Masters of Public Health from United States in 1988, M.Sc. Medical Administration from Quad-i-Azam University in 1997 and FCPS from College of Physicians & Surgeons, Karachi in 2001. He has served in Armed Forces for about 25 years on various Administrative & Teaching appointments. He has served as Health Officer of Rawalpindi Cantt (1992-94) and Health Officer of Quetta Garrison from 1997 to 1999. Col (R) Dr M. Ashraf Chaudhry has played a key role in investigating and controlling numerous outbreaks of infectious diseases throughout Pakistan. He also participated in several Health Education campaigns in Armed Forces and delivered lectures to troops on important public health issues.

He is excellent and reputable teacher and has vast experience of teaching the subject of Community Medicine/Public Health both to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. He has written several articles in various newspapers on important public health issues of Pakistan such as smoking, malaria, climate change, gastro, drug abuse, precautionary measures in summer, population explosion, dengue fever, Breastfeeding, Fasting, Cold and Flu, heart attacks, suicides, Breast Cancer, diabetes, harmful effects of gas heaters, HIV/AIDS, Maternal & Child Health, inequities threat to global health, physical inactivity etc. in order to raise awareness among the public.

He has developed a number of pamphlets/brochures/handbills and literature on important public health issues such as “Smoking Cessation Techniques”, “Principles of Good Health”, and Avoid Heart Attacks and Strokes – Protect Yourself”, “TB – Know the Facts” to create awareness among the community regarding various health problems. He has also participated in several Radio/TV talks on important public health issues of Pakistan for creating awareness among public. Dr Ashraf Chaudhry has participated in a number of workshops, seminars, conferences and short courses. He has organized a number of seminars/symposia on important public health problems such as ‘Smoking’, ‘Breast Cancer’, AIDS, and Dengue Fever, World Health Day 2010, World TB Day 2011 and World No Tobacco Day 2011. He is also author of one book i.e. “Lecture Notes on Biostatistics”. He has supervised several Master of Public Health dissertations of University of Punjab and University of Health Sciences, Lahore. He is member of Population of Association of Pakistan, Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) and Pakistan Medical Association (PMA). His special areas of interest are: Research Methodology, Medical Writing, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Diseases of Public Health importance, Hospital Management, Medical Demography, smoking, community water supply and Environmental Pollution. His more than 18 articles have been published in various reputable journals.


Dr Farah Alhmad: (MBBS, MBA, MPH)

Assistant Professor

A graduate of Ayub Medical College, trained in Obs­/Gynae and Family Medicine. She has clinical experience as MO at Troops Family Welfare Centers in various places and has a teaching experience as a Demonstrator at Foundation University. She is computer literate and her hobbies include reading scientific and medical literate.

Community Household and Health Survey 2011

This survey was conducted by students of 4th year MBBS class on 14th June, 2011. Quarters of JCOs/ORs were visited in order to know the sanitary conditions of quarters and health status of families.
