The departments specific to clinical dentistry established in the Institute are:
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Preventive and Community Dentistry
Periodontology and Oral Medicine
Demonstrators
The demonstrators are an integral part of faculty. They are actively involved in preclinical and clinical
demonstrations and conducting practicals. They are responsible for extending treatment to patient at Out
Patients Department (OPD).
Sterilization
Central sterilization system has been established by a world renowned company in the field with various
checks at different stages of sterilization in accordance with the requirements
of health agencies.
Laboratories
A chain of laboratories to provide hands-on training to the
under- and post-graduate students with latest machines has
also been established and consists of the following:
Phantom Head Laboratory
Oral Pathology Laboratory
Prosthodontics Laboratory
Orthodontics Laboratory
Dental Ceramics Laboratory
Radiology Department
In addition, an excellent radiology department has been established having facilities of orthopentomogram,
cephalogram and periapical radiographs.
Our Aim
The aim of establishing the Institute is not only to provide highly trained dental professionals to the society
but also to serve as a platform for the provision of excellent dental treatment to the community. It is going
to be a centre where the patients will be made to feel comfortable by providing infection free dental
treatment with continuous introduction of modern treatment modalities.
The institute has been staffed with highly qualified and experienced faculty members. In addition, the
institute is also inviting world renowned professors and technicians to conduct
seminars and lectures. Thus
the institute, despite being in an infancy phase, is already established as a hub for continuing education
programs.
Course Description (BDS)
The Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme prepares students for careers in the modern world
of dental practice by combining clinical studies with basic and advanced dental sciences. Once students
have mastered basic sciences and pre-clinical aspects in the institutes skills laboratories, they move on to
patients in 3rd Year BDS in the dental clinics.
The BDS programme aims to develop professional and ethical dentists who can:
Take a patient-centred approach to clinical care within the dental team.
Apply the skills, knowledge, behaviours and abilities to independent practice safely and
efficiently.
Be a reflective practitioner, committed to lifelong learning.
How is The Degree Programme Organized?
The course taught in the Institute of Dentistry is recommended by the University of Health Sciences
and approved by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. This curriculum is delivered over a span of four
years.
The subjects studied in different years of BDS are:-
First year B.D.S.: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Oral Biology, Behavioural sciences
Second Year B.D.S.: Pharmacology, Pathology, Behavioural sciences, Science of Dental Materials,
Community and Preventive Dentistry.
Third Year B.D.S.: General Medicine, General Surgery, Periodontology, Oral Medicine and Oral
Pathology
Final Year B.D.S.: Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery, Operative Dentistry.
Academic Support is Available?
In addition to course faculty, a member of the academic staff has been appointed as Students Affairs Advisor (SAA) to BDS students. He will assist you with any academic problems. You will meet with your SAA on a regular basis to discuss your work and progress. A portfolio is used to encourage reflection and to help you monitor your progress and achievements against specific learning objectives.
What are Your Career Prospects?
Most dental graduates become general dental practitioners. Other possible careers lie in the hospital
services. In all spheres of Dentistry, education is recognized as a lifelong experience and continuing
education is increasingly recognized as important for the professional development of a graduate.
Choosing a career of dentistry requires you to undertake a period of supervised training (house job)
designed to ease the transition between dental college and general dental practice. This house job period
lasts for one year. Your permanent registration with Pakistan Medical & Dental Council is only allowed
after the completion of the house job.
Graduates may choose to study for one of the higher diplomas or degrees awarded by the University of
Health Sciences or College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. The University of Health Sciences
offers various degrees in Clinical & Basic Sciences which leads to PhD, MPhil, MDS, while College of
Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan awards Fellowships in the clinical subjects that include Operative
Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics and Oral Surgery and Maxillofical Surgery.
Continuing Education Programs
The institute is proud of taking active participation in conducting many workshops and seminars presented
by national and international speakers. This help the members of dental community to keep themselves
abreast with advances made in medical and dental sciences and incorporate cutting edge technology in
their practice.
